Why learning more than one language is important?

We live in a multilingual world that is becoming increasingly globalized and it is very important to consider learning more than one language. There are three main reasons for this: an additional language can  help you progress in your career; it is known that if you speak many language you may have more chances to find a job. Also, you gain an awareness of other cultures and be more sensitive to cultural differences; by studying another lanuage — for instance, the Knowledge of their language as well as their culture shows that you respect the ideas that they bring to the table and you understand their needs and wants better than somebody who does not have this background. It allows you to communicate with different people. All good methods of learning languages also entail learning about another culture, especially when your language skills get to a higher level. More importantly, it helps increase our understanding and knowledge of our own language as for my experience teaching Darija (Moroccan Arabic) to Non-Native speakers made me realise how rich the language is and this was a good reason for me to search more and improve my understanding of it.

Through languages we represent our own cultures and values. There is always- or most of the times a link between the language you want to learn and the People who speak it, their culture, civilisation, literature, politics, ...etc. You may want to travel to a country and you wish to converse with locals in their own language and not in Arabic or whatever. Once you are able to speak a certain language that you have been learning, you try to understand the cultural aspects behind it so that you can use that language properly with a native speaker. Moreover, I believe it is important to understand if not all- the most important cultural backgrounds and aspects of the language you intend to learn.

In my opinion, the reason why speakers don't learn much about other languages is that they don't need to learn them as their language is spoken in almost every corner of their country. It is true that our language is the most important part of our being. Yet, It is worth mentioning that learning other languages would help us learn more about the world.
